Prof. Richard Stanley gave a talk titled “A Survey of Alternating Permutations” at NCMIS on Aug7, 2014.

Prof. Stanley gave a talk about some enumerative problems on alternating permutations and their applications in integer partitions, probability theory and the representation of finite groups. In particular, he explained three different proofs of the Andre formula for the exponential generating functions of Euler numbers, which count the numbers of alternating permutations. At the end of his talk, he presented several open problems related to the longest alternating permutations.

Prof. Stanley is a Professor of Applied Mathematics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received Leroy P. Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition in 2001 and Rolf Schock Prize in Mathematics in 2003. He was elected as the Fellow of the United States National Academy of Sciences in 1995, the Fellow of American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1998.
